Texas Algebra Ready Initiative: Adding Opportunity for Texas Children

Student Success Initiative (SSI)

About SSI

The Student Success Initiative (SSI) is intended to recognize the importance of academic success and the diversity of learners that are present in Texas public schools.  The initiative is primarily focused on assessment of student progress at milestone grade points.  Specific SSI grade advancement requirements include the Grade 3 reading test, the Grade 5 reading and mathematics tests and the Grade 8 reading and mathematics tests.

While students are currently assessed for mathematics proficiency using the state standardized assessment (TAKS) at every grade starting at Grade 3 and continuing through Grade 11, state law identifies specific points—Grades 3, 5 and 8—where all students must pass the state standardized assessment in order to be moved to the next higher grade level.
